Information about the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
The Ancient Roman wonder was built in 351 BCE as a tomb for the fallen Persian Satrap, Mausolus. The mausoleum was 135ft tall. Mausolus died in 353 BCE. Artemisia, Mausolus's wife, said the tomb was to be built to match the splendor of the city. She died 2 years later and her ashes were entombed with him, but later destroyed by earthquakes. The tomb was completely dismantled by the knights of St.John of Malta in 1494 C.E. They used the stone to build a castle at Bodrum in now modern day Turkey. The tomb was built in Egyptian, Greek and Lycian styles. It was created a wonder due to his beauty and great value. Several pieces were recovered and are in the British Museum of London. The architects of this beautiful wonder were Satyros and Pythias of Priene.
